A 10-Minute Phonics Routine at Home

Home practice does not need to be long. Ten focused minutes can reinforce class learning when the material matches the child’s level and the interaction stays positive.

Minutes 1–3

Review three to five known sounds or patterns with simple cards and calm modelling.

Minutes 4–7

Blend two or three suitable words, then read one or two short sentences from a decodable text.

Minutes 8–10

Segment one word for spelling and end with something the child can do successfully. Stop before fatigue becomes frustration.

Frequently asked questions

Must we practise every day?

Consistency helps, but a calm and appropriate session matters more than forcing practice.

What if I am unsure about pronunciation?

Ask the teacher for an audio model and stay with the patterns currently being taught.
