Segmenting for English Spelling
Segmenting is the reverse of blending. A child hears map, separates /m/ /a/ /p/, and chooses letters for each sound.
Make sounds visible
The child can move one counter for each sound before choosing letters. This separates the sound task from handwriting.
Build and check
Arrange letter cards or write the graphemes, then blend the finished word to check it.
Respond to approximations
First check whether every sound was heard. Model spelling patterns that have not yet been taught without turning the attempt into failure.
Frequently asked questions
Is segmenting the same as syllables?
No. Phoneme segmentation works with smaller sound units than syllables.
Must children write immediately?
No. Counters and letter cards are useful before handwriting is fluent.
